USUA Flying Club 1 Mentoring Program
CONCEPT
To enlist experienced Flying Club 1 members that will participate in the introduction of UL Aviation to new members.Mentors are active club members that will work with new members. They do not need to own a plane.
Mentors will be selected based upon the home address to a new member and type of aircraft if appropriate. However, it will be the responsibility of the new member to contact a mentor from the list provided to them by the Membership Coordinator.
This program is purely voluntary for both existing members and new members. If either prefers not to participate, they should advise the Membership Coordinator.
MENTORS
Familiarize new member with the Flying Club 1 Membership Guide (available on website)<Familiarize new member with Club web site and links.
Have new member visit UL airfields. Stay in contact with new member. Encourage them to become involved with flyin activities. ( NEW volunteers for Flyin Events Coordinator)
Educate new member about uniqueness of UL aircraft and UL Aviation . Acquaint them with Part 103 and the Light Aircraft Buyers checklist (both on website). Again, encourage new members to read articles on Club 1 website.
Explain costs involved (Airplane, Hanger Availability & Rent, Insurance, Flight Instruction, Maintenance, Virginia Licensing). Explain that UL aircraft are repaired by 90% of owners. Does new member have the mechanical aptitude/interest to learn to maintain his /her own aircraft and engine.
Orient new members to Part 103 and the new Sport Pilot licensing proposal.
Explain necessity of BOTH Ground School & Flight Training. Have new member obtain Business Cards from local UL flight instructors: . Explain desirability of training in an aircraft similar to that which anew member expects to purchase ( 2-axis,, Tricycle, Taildragger, Trike, Powered Parachute, etc)
Provide new member historic perspective of UL Aviation, USUA, and Flying Club 1. ( Articles on website )
Suggest new member acquaint themselves with various reading materials for background information:
- UL Aviation Catalogs (Lockwood, CPS, etc)
- Ultralight Flying ! magazine
- EAA Experimenter
- Kit Builder
- Dennis Pagan Publications
- Official USUA Pilot Training Flight Manual
Workshops - Hands-on at airfields observing & participating in repairs
